You need your own legal copy of Bloodborne. Lantern Engine contains no game files, and nobody here shares or links to them. Dump the game from your own PS4 and your own disc or purchase (see Is this legal?). Don't ask for game files in the Discord: the bot mutes it (see which words).
The game crashed
The graphics driver stopped responding: the GPU hung or lost the game's memory. It ran for 42 min.
Safe mode starts the next run with the experimental engine options and mods off. Copy report puts the details and the end of the log on the clipboard, for a bug report.
Nothing matches that. Try another word, or ask in the Discord.
Before you post a problem
Send the log. Without it nobody can tell what went wrong.
Copy the crash report
When the game crashes, the launcher shows The game crashed with a short reason. Press Copy report. The launcher says when it is on the clipboard.
Use safe mode starts the next run with mods and the experimental engine options off. If the game works in safe mode, one of those caused it.
Or export the log
No crash window? In the launcher open Game output, then Export… Do it right after the problem, before you start the game again.
The last session's log is also saved as logs\last_session.log in the Lantern Engine folder.
Post it in #issues
One thread per problem in the #issues forum on the Discord. Attach the log as a file and say where you were and what you pressed.
For anything visual, add a short video or a screenshot, and say whether it also happens with mods off.

The game crashed: copy the crash report
When the game crashes, the launcher shows The game crashed with a short reason. Press Copy report and paste it into your post. It has your version, GPU, driver, settings and the end of the log.
Use safe mode starts the next run with mods and the experimental engine options off. If the game works in safe mode, one of those caused it.
How do I copy or export my log?
In the launcher: Game output in the sidebar (with tabs: More › Log), then Copy or Export… Do it right after the problem happens, before you start the game again.
The log of the last session is also saved as logs\last_session.log in the Lantern Engine folder.
What else to put in a report
- The log or crash report (above).
- What you were doing: where in the game, what you pressed, how long it ran.
- For anything visual (flicker, missing or stretched textures): a short video or a screenshot.
- Whether it also happens with mods off.
Post it in the #issues forum on the Discord, one thread per problem.
Why was my Discord message deleted, or why was I muted?
The Discord's bot deletes messages with these words and mutes the sender for 60 minutes, because they are how people ask for pirated game files.
- Anywhere in a message, even inside another word:
ebooteboot.bin - As a word on its own:
dumpdownloadgame fileshow to download filesromboot
- Say "game folder" or "my copy of the game" instead.
- "Download" counts too, even for the launcher: say "get it from the releases page".
- Send logs as a file, not pasted lines: Game output › Export…, or Copy report after a crash (Discord turns a long paste into a file). Log lines contain some of these words.
Getting started
Lantern Engine runs your own copy of Bloodborne on a Windows or Linux PC.
Is this legal?
Lantern Engine is free, open-source software (GPL). It contains no game files: no Bloodborne data, no PS4 system files, nothing from Sony or FromSoftware. It is not affiliated with either of them.
To play, you need your own legal copy of Bloodborne, dumped from your own PS4 with your own disc or digital purchase, plus the 1.09 update. Downloading the game from the internet instead of dumping your own copy is piracy, and this project does not support it: nobody here shares or links to game files. Don't ask for them in the Discord.
What do I need?
- Your own legal copy of Bloodborne CUSA03173 with the 1.09 update, dumped and decrypted from your own PS4 (the folder with
eboot.binandsce_module). No game files come with Lantern Engine. - Windows 10 or 11, or Linux (Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, Arch, Fedora, SteamOS, Bazzite and similar).
- A Vulkan graphics card with a current driver. Players run it on NVIDIA GTX 10 series and newer, and AMD RX 400 series and newer.
- The game takes about 6 GB of memory (RAM plus page file), about 10 GB above 1080p. 16 GB of RAM is comfortable.
How do I install it and play?
- Get the latest package from Releases and unpack it somewhere you can write to (not
Program Files, not a OneDrive folder). - Open Lantern Engine.exe (on Linux: Lantern Engine).
- On the Play page, choose the game folder.
- Accept Settings for this PC when the launcher offers them. You can get them again later from Graphics › Best settings for this PC › Recommend…
- Press Play.
How do I update?
The launcher updates itself and the engine: Settings › Updates. Your settings, saves, mods and logs are kept. To get test builds early, see the Beta guide.
If the Play page shows Engine update available, press Update engine. Playing on an old engine means the crash fixes since then are missing.
On Linux the launcher updates itself too. Packages older than 0.9.37 beta 7 are updated by getting the new one from Releases.
Does it work on Linux?
Yes. Get the linux-x64.tar.gz package, unpack it, and open Lantern Engine, or run ./lantern.sh /path/to/CUSA03173 from a terminal. It runs natively on Wayland and X11.
DLSS Super Resolution works on Linux on RTX cards with NVIDIA's driver. DLSS Frame Generation is Windows only.
Graphics settings guide
Not sure what to pick? Start with Graphics › Best settings for this PC › Recommend… and change things from there.
Which upscaler should I use?
Graphics › Upscaler. The upscaler renders the game below your screen's resolution and rebuilds a sharp image, which gives you more FPS.
| Your graphics card | Best choice |
|---|---|
| NVIDIA RTX (20 series and newer) | DLSS |
| AMD RX 9000 series | FSR 4 |
| Other GPUs with the needed Vulkan features | FSR 4.1.1 (experimental; the launcher says if your GPU can run it) |
| Any other card | FSR 3 |
| Fast card, sharpest image without upscaling | DLSS or FSR with the Native AA preset, or TAA |
Quality preset: Native AA, Quality, Balanced, Performance…
Graphics › Quality preset sets how far below your screen the game renders.
- Native AA: no upscaling, only anti-aliasing (with DLSS this is DLAA). Best image, lowest FPS.
- Quality (x1.5) and Balanced (x1.7): a good mix for most PCs.
- Performance (x2) and Ultra Performance (x3): for slower cards, or 4K screens.
Output resolution
Display › Output resolution is the size of the finished picture, usually your screen's. The upscaler renders below it and fills it in. On cards with 3–4 GB of video memory, 1080p is the safe choice.
Frame rate: 30, 60, 90, 120, 144 or Uncapped?
Display › Frame rate. 30, 60, 90, 120 and 144 are the game's own frame-rate patches. Pick the one your PC holds steadily that is not above your monitor's refresh rate.
- Uncapped has no fixed rate, but it never goes above your monitor's refresh rate: on a 60 Hz monitor it stops at 60. To go past it anyway, add
BB_CAP_TO_REFRESH=0in Settings › Extra variables. - Uncapped can freeze at the end of a boss intro (Vicar Amelia's). 120 and 144 use another patch and don't.
Presentation mode (VSync)
On the Display page, Presentation mode:
- Mailbox (default): low latency without tearing.
- FIFO (VSync): classic vertical sync. On a 60 Hz monitor at 60 FPS it can be smoother than Mailbox, which drops a frame now and then.
- FIFO Relaxed: VSync that tears instead of stuttering when a frame is late.
- Immediate: lowest latency, may tear.
Frame generation and NVIDIA Reflex
Graphics › Frame generation adds generated frames between the game's own. It needs an upscaler (or TAA) on.
- DLSS frame generation: NVIDIA RTX 40 and 50 series, with Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling on in Windows. RTX 50 can generate several frames, and dynamic frame generation picks how many for your refresh rate.
- FSR 3.1 frame generation: any GPU. Not in menus or movies.
- NVIDIA Reflex lowers input lag, and also keeps NVIDIA cards at their boost clocks.
Frame generation feels best when the game already runs at 50–60 FPS or more.
HDR
Display › HDR output. Windows HDR has to be on (Windows Settings › Display › Use HDR). Turning it on or off applies after restarting the game.
In-game menu (Insert or L3 + R3)
Press Insert on the keyboard, or L3 + R3 on a controller, to change graphics settings while you play: upscaler, sharpening, the FPS counter and more. Most changes apply at once.
Common questions
Shaders, saves, co-op with bells, online play, mods and keys.
Why does the game stutter when I enter a new area?
The first time the game shows something new, the engine builds its shaders, which can cause a short hitch. It only happens once: shaders are saved and built at the start the next time.
- After an engine update the first start takes longer: it rebuilds the saved shaders before the game starts, so you don't get them as stutters in play.
- A small Building shaders note shows in the corner while it happens. A stutter with the note is shader building; one without it is loading.
- You can share shaders: Settings › Shader catalog › Export catalog, and a friend with the same kind of graphics card adds it with Add catalog.
Should I clear the shader cache?
Usually not. A new engine version recompiles it by itself. Clear it (Settings › Shader cache › Clear) only if something draws wrong in every save, such as missing skin or hair. The next start compiles everything again and stutters for a while.
Are my saves backed up?
Yes. The launcher backs up your saves at each start, and every 10 minutes while you play when they changed. Find them on the Saves page under Backups, with Restore beside each one. The same page shows your hunters and profiles, and imports saves from shadPS4 or a PS4.
How do I play with a friend (co-op)?
- Both players: in the game's Settings › Network, set the same Password Matching, and Matching Regions to Worldwide.
- The host rings a Beckoning Bell, the helper rings a Small Resonant Bell. Both can be bought in the Insight shop.
- Wait for the bells to resonate. It can take a while.
How do I play online (The Hunter's Dream)?
- In the launcher open the Online page. If you have no account yet, press Open website and sign up on The Hunter's Dream.
- Connect your Hunter's Dream account on the Online page.
- Start the game and choose Play Online. A welcome message appears when you are connected.
Server problems go to The Hunter's Dream's own Discord.
How do I play seamless co-op?
Up to 4 hunters play the host's world together in a private room, with no bells needed and nobody sent home after a boss. It's in the betas for now: see Seamless co-op for the full guide.
How do I install mods?
Unpack each mod into its own folder inside mods, so that it holds dvdroot_ps4:
mods\Mod name\dvdroot_ps4\chr\…
Then turn it on and set the load order in Mods & patches. The lowest mod in the list wins when two mods change the same file. ZIP or 7z archives have to be unpacked first. Mods that replace eboot.bin, DLL injectors and script plugins don't work. Mods work on exFAT and FAT32 drives too.
How do I change keys?
In Controls, click an action and press the new key or mouse button.
The + next to an action adds another key or a combination like Shift+E or Ctrl+Mouse4, up to five per action. A combination wins over its plain key.
Mouse sensitivity goes down to -10 for high-DPI mice; each step below 0 is 20% slower. Mouse side buttons are bound in the Elden Ring style profile.
The Debug Menu won't start
The debug menu needs the font files DbgFont14h.ccm and DbgFont14h.tpf in dvdroot_ps4\font, either in your game folder or in an enabled mod (Mods & patches). The fonts are on Nexus Mods.
They have to be the packed files. A DbgFont14h-tpf-dcx folder (unpacked with WitchyBND) does not work: repack it. Don't copy them into an out\mod-game-… folder. The engine makes that folder new at every start.
Trophies
The Trophies page lists them with their pictures. You can use your own trophy sound in WAV, MP3 or M4A, and set its volume.
Seamless co-op Beta
Play the host's world together, up to 4 hunters, in a private encrypted room. In the 0.9.39 betas; get one from Join or leave the beta.
What is seamless co-op?
Seamless co-op is Lantern's own co-op, separate from the game's bells and from The Hunter's Dream. Up to 4 hunters play the host's world in one room:
- Nobody is sent home after a boss or when someone dies.
- The host's lamp takes the whole party along.
- You don't need a Hunter's Dream account, open ports or Insight.
- Everything between you is encrypted. Nobody else can join unless the host opens the room.
Everyone needs the same Lantern Engine version and Bloodborne 1.09.
Set it up: host and guests
- Everyone: update to the newest beta (Settings › Updates, channel Beta).
- Everyone: on the launcher's Online page, turn on Play online and Seamless co-op.
- Everyone: set your Plate name, the name the others see above your hunter (up to 16 characters).
- The host sets Role to Host, presses Copy invite code and sends the code to friends (Discord DM, for example).
- Guests set Role to Join, copy the code and press Paste invite code.
- Everyone starts the game and loads their own hunter.
The invite code stays the same through updates, so you only send it once. New room makes a new code, and the old one stops working.
Summon each other
- Press F2 (controller: hold L3 and press D-pad Up) to open the co-op menu.
- The host picks Start summon. Guests pick Send sign.
- The screen shows how it goes: looking, found, connecting, connected. Guests arrive beside the host.
The bells work too: anywhere, even after the area boss is dead, and with no Insight. If summons give up too soon on a slow connection, raise Summon sign timeout on the Online page.
The co-op menu (F2)
- Host: start a session without a bell, bring or kick each hunter, Bring all, and end the session. Bring works within the same area.
- Guest: start a summon, ask the host to bring you, or return to your own world. The host sees "asks to come to you" and accepts with Bring.
- The list shows each hunter's ping and connection: reconnecting means their connection dropped for a moment.
- Voice chat: turn it on or off, mute yourself or one hunter, pick push to talk (V by default, or any key or mouse button) or open mic, and set the volume up to 500%. It is encrypted like the rest and only sent while you speak.
- The Co-op tab of the in-game menu (Insert) can hide connection status, join and leave lines, ping on the party HUD, and requests.
Lamps, deaths and bosses
- The host's lamp takes the whole party to the new place. Nobody goes home.
- A guest's lamp asks the host first. The host accepts in the F2 menu, and then everyone travels together.
- A guest's lamp to the Hunter's Dream goes alone and leaves the party, because that's where you level up. Summon them back afterwards.
- Deaths: a hunter who dies gets back up, and the party stays together. Nobody is sent home.
- Bosses: killing a boss keeps the session. Every hunter in the fight gets the kill, the boss's drop and its rewards in their own save.
- Chalice dungeons work with the party too.
Items, loot and progress
A guest plays the host's world like their own:
- Each hunter's own: items, chests, enemy drops and NPC quests.
- Shared: bosses, lamps, doors, shortcuts and story.
- Guests keep their own stats and level.
- A guest's save keeps what was done while they were in the host's world. It never gets the host's earlier progress.
- An NPC is one character for the whole room: killing or angering one does it for everyone.
New in 0.9.39 beta 31: guests get the map's items and chests, their full enemy drops, and NPCs that talk through windows. This hasn't been played with two hunters yet, so please tell us in #issues if a guest still misses items.
Play with no server (direct connection)
The host's game can run the room itself instead of Lantern's server. Set it under Connection on the Online page.
- It needs a way to reach the host: the same network, a VPN such as Tailscale or Radmin, or a forwarded port (TCP 38765 by default).
- The invite code carries the host's address, so guests still just paste it.
- Guests' traffic goes straight to the host. That's often the lowest ping when you're far from Europe.
Visitors: Open my room to visitors
Rooms are private unless the host chooses otherwise. Open my room to visitors is off by default.
While it's on, the host's game gives the room's invite code to Lantern's co-op server. The Lantern event team can then see it in Discord and join for surprise events, so that room isn't private from them.
- Everyone in the room sees a line when a visitor joins, and the host can Kick them.
- Nobody is moved: guests keep control of their own summons.
- Turning it off or leaving takes the room off the list at once. New room retires a code they already saw.
Something goes wrong
- Check that everyone is on the same version. Mixed versions can't share a room, and a guest can lose items.
- Press Test on the Online page to check the connection.
- Use the same gameplay mods as the host, or none. Different mods can make items go missing for a guest.
- With Play online off, the game is fully offline: no room, and cheats work.
- To report a problem, post both players' logs (Game output › Export…) in #issues, and say who was host.
Who hosts the co-op servers?
Lantern's seamless co-op rooms run on a server in Frankfurt, Germany, sponsored by 1337 Hosting. Thank you to them for keeping co-op free for everyone. It works well across Europe and reaches the Middle East and the US East Coast with decent latency.
Fixing problems
First steps for almost anything: update the launcher and engine, update your GPU driver, and try once with mods off (or Use safe mode after a crash).
The game opens, shows a black screen and closes
- Check that the engine is current: the Play page shows Engine update available when it isn't.
- Update the graphics driver.
- An antivirus can block the engine's files. Allow the Lantern Engine folder in it.
- Don't install into
Program Filesor a OneDrive folder. - If it started after a beta update, check the Beta guide: it may be a known beta problem, and you can go back to the version before.
"The graphics driver stopped responding" (0x17)
The GPU hung or lost the game's memory.
- Update to the newest version and update the NVIDIA or AMD driver.
- If it keeps happening, try once with
BB_GUEST_IN_PLACE=0in Settings › Extra variables, and say in your report whether it helped.
"Out of video memory", or crashes on a 3–4 GB graphics card
- Lower Display › Output resolution to 1080p or less, and use a lower Quality preset (Performance).
- Use fewer texture or model mods: HD texture packs need much more video memory.
- Close browsers and recorders while playing.
- Keep Engine switches › Use more VRAM for textures off on cards with 4–6 GB.
"Windows could not give the game its memory" at the start
The game needs about 6 GB of RAM plus page file (about 10 GB above 1080p).
- A game left running in the background holds it: end
bb-probe.exein Task Manager (Details), or restart the PC. - Set the page file to System managed size: Windows Settings › System › About › Advanced system settings › Performance Settings › Advanced › Virtual memory › Change.
- Or choose a lower output resolution or upscaler preset.
The game crashes while loading (missing or damaged game files)
If the crash report mentions missing files or FileTransferTask, the game folder is incomplete or damaged. Turn mods off first. If it still crashes, dump or extract the game again (base game plus the 1.09 update), and keep it out of OneDrive.
Flickering, stretched or missing textures
- Update to the newest version: many flicker and texture bugs are fixed in newer versions.
- Lamp fog popping in and out, or sunlight fog flickering to another colour: fixed in 0.9.39 beta 31 Beta. Graphics has Steady lamp fog and Steady sunlight color to compare.
- On 0.9.39 beta 31 and newer, something drawn wrong that the version before drew right: turn off Engine switches › Native renderer: draws once, and say in your report whether it helped.
- If it happens in every save (missing skin or hair), clear the shader cache once: Settings › Shader cache › Clear.
- Try with mods off, and with frame generation off.
- Still there? Post a short video and your log.
Small stutters at 60 FPS on a 60 Hz monitor
Set Presentation mode to FIFO (VSync) on the Display page. At 60 FPS on a 60 Hz screen, Mailbox can drop a frame every so often, and that feels like a micro-stutter. Stutters the first time you see an area are shader building, see Why does the game stutter.
The game is stuck at 30 FPS
The game runs slower while its window is in the background, to save power. Click into the game window.
"Cannot create save file"
The saves folder can't be written, and the launcher now says why. Move Lantern Engine out of OneDrive and other synced folders, and out of Program Files. If Windows' Controlled folder access is on, allow the Lantern Engine programs in it.
Mods don't load ("cannot link … dvdroot_ps4")
On exFAT and FAT32 drives, update: versions before 0.9.37 could not link mod files there. Also check that each mod's folder holds dvdroot_ps4 (see How do I install mods?). The start's log says how many game files each mod replaced.
Linux: the window closes at the start on Wayland
If the log says Wayland display connection closed by server, the compositor ended the connection, a driver and compositor mismatch (NVIDIA 615 drivers on KDE Plasma did this; 580 runs clean). Try another driver version, or start with SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11 ./lantern.sh to run through XWayland.
What players asked
Recent questions and reports from the Discord, with the answer.
Is there a guide for graphics settings?
Yes, see the graphics settings guide. The quickest start is Graphics › Best settings for this PC › Recommend…
Lamp fog pops in and out when I move the cameraForbidden Woods bridge, lots of lamps.
The game only lists lamps it sees, so the fog dropped lamps as the camera turned. Lamps are now remembered and fade in and out. Graphics › Steady lamp fog switches it.
Sunlight fog flickers between white and blue
The fog took its colour from a default light that came and went. It now follows the area's own light and changes smoothly, so some places look bluer than before. Graphics › Steady sunlight color switches it.
As a guest in seamless co-op I get no items from chests or enemies
Guests now get the map's items, chests and their own enemy drops. Please tell us in #issues if a guest still misses items. See Items, loot and progress.
Game crash after 10 min, sometimes 1h laterThe graphics driver stopped responding.
Update to the newest version and your GPU driver. See "The graphics driver stopped responding", and post your log if it still happens.
Uncapped seems locked at 60
Uncapped stops at your monitor's refresh rate on purpose. Add BB_CAP_TO_REFRESH=0 in Settings › Extra variables to go past it, or pick FIFO (VSync) for smoother 60.
Very small micro stutters when rolling or running
Mostly shaders built the first time something shows; they are built at the start from then on. At 60 FPS on a 60 Hz screen, try FIFO (VSync).
Can I bind more than one key, or Shift+key?
Yes: the + next to an action in Controls adds up to five keys, mouse buttons or combinations. Mouse sensitivity goes from -10 to 20.
Debug Menu won't start even with the patch
The fonts have to be the packed files in dvdroot_ps4\font of the game folder or an enabled mod. See The Debug Menu won't start.
Known issues
Reported and not fixed yet. Lantern Engine is moving to its own native engine, so expect bugs even in stable releases. A log or a video of any of these helps.
- Some lights, smoke and lamp glow missing, and blocky lighting, on some PCs.
- Green or white flashes at doors in the Research Hall, and white or blue screens in the Forbidden Woods.
- FPS dropping after long sessions on some PCs.
- 4K with DLSS or FSR above Performance: light dotted outlines around tree branches.
- Steam Deck: a crash in Game Mode after the intro (Desktop Mode works).
- Falling snow missing in Cainhurst.
- Crashes on graphics cards with 3 GB of video memory.
Beta guide
Betas get the newest fixes and features first. How to get them, what the current one changes, and how to report what it breaks.
Updates
Nothing matches that. Try another word, or ask in the Discord.
What the beta is
Test builds that come before a stable release.
Should I use the beta?
Betas are test builds that come before a stable release. They have the newest fixes and features, and sometimes new bugs. Use one if a problem you have is fixed in it, or if you want to help test. Stay on stable if you just want to play.
Your settings, saves, mods and logs are kept when you switch between beta and stable.
Join or leave the beta
One setting in the launcher, and you can go back any time.
Get the beta
- In the launcher: Settings › Updates.
- Set Update channel to Beta.
- Press Check now and install the update.
On Linux, the launcher updates itself from 0.9.37 beta 7 on. Before that, get the Linux package from Releases and unpack it over your folder.
Go back to stable, or to the version before
Set Update channel back to Stable to get stable updates again. To install a particular version right away (for example the beta before, when a new one breaks your game): Settings › Updates › Version, pick it, and press Install.
Current beta
The newest beta is 0.9.39 beta 31; the newest stable is 0.9.38.
Reporting beta problems
Say which beta, and whether the one before had it.
What helps
- The crash report or log (see Before you post). Both start with your version, so we know which beta it was.
- Whether it also happened on the version before. If not, say so: it means the new beta caused it.
- Post in #issues on the Discord.
